Enterococcus (ex Thiercelin and Jouhaud 1903) Schleifer and Kilpper-Bälz 1984, gen. nov., nom. rev. (Type genus of the family ¤Enterococcaceae Ludwig et al. 2010).

Type species: Enterococcus faecalis (Andrewes and Horder 1906) Schleifer and Kilpper-Bälz 1984.

Synonym: “Enterococcus” Thiercelin and Jouhaud 1903.

Etymology: Gr. n. enteron, intestine; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos, grain, seed), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Enterococcus, intestinal coccus
