Enterobacter Hormaeche and Edwards 1960, genus.

Type species: Enterobacter cloacae (Jordan 1890) Hormaeche and Edwards 1960 (Approved Lists 1980).

Synonyms: “Cloaca” Castellani and Chalmers 1919, “Aerobacter” Hormaeche and Edwards 1958, not “Aerobacter” Beijerinck 1900, not “Enterobacter” Rahn 1937.

Etymology: Gr. n. enteron, intestine; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a small rod; N.L. masc. n. Enterobacter, intestinal small rod.
